Welsh National Opera: Manon Lescaut

Giacomo Puccini

Puccini’s great breakthrough

Puccini’s third opera, Manon Lescaut, was a great success. It established him as Verdi’s successor and a fixed star on the Italian opera firmament, renowned the world over. Manon Lescaut is Puccini at his very best: melodic arias, high notes, and music bursting with passion. The performances are Welsh National Opera productions.

Manon leaves the wealthy Geronte in the hope of finding true love. Together with Des Grieux, she plans to make her escape, but renouncing a life of luxury is not so easy. Manon is arrested for leading an immoral life and sentenced to a penal settlement in Louisiana. The lovers’ last journey begins.
