The perfect opera summer

Summer 2018 is a dream come true for opera lovers: evenings in a castle that echoes to the sound of great classics that touch, speak to and entertain with their age-old topics.

Whatever performance you choose, you will be swept along by beautiful music and unbridled emotions. Time to spend at leisure, a sparkling lake and the town of Savonlinna famous for its festive mood: the Opera Festival embodies the most glorious high-summer moods.

A full-blooded season

The new Opera Festival production for the season is Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades transporting us back to the romantic Russia of Pushkin’s day. The powerful stories continue with Faust, reborn after an interval of 16 years, and Otello – an opera that makes even the castle walls drip with jealousy.

And what would sunset be without Puccini? The Festival’s guest this summer is the celebrated Italian Puccini Festival from Tuscany, the very source of that composer’s masterly art. These true Puccini experts will be staging two full-blooded dramas, Tosca and Turandot, and to complete the fine summer programme we have Savonlinna’s own beloved Madama Butterfly.
