Timo Mustakallio Singing Competition

The two most recent winners of the competition, Iris Candelaria and Johan Krogius, both sing lead roles at the 2023 Savonlinna Opera Festival: they are seen as Pamina and Tamino of The Magic Flute. This summer will be the 32nd time that the Timo Mustakallio Singing Competition has launched young singers’ successful opera careers.

The winner may not necessarily be the most technically advanced competitor but one who has the most unique voice or an exceptional expression.

Enrolment in the competition begins early in the year, and the competitors are selected in a qualifying process in spring 2023.

The national competition was established by Timo Mustakallio, a former general director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival (1929–1984). It is organised by the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Timo Mustakallio Foundation in collaboration with the Eero Rantala Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

First round
Savonlinna hall at 11 am

Finals
Savonlinna hall at 7 pm

The programme comprises lieds and opera arias chosen by the contestants.

It’s easy to combine watching the competition with an opera performance, as all the excitement takes place in just one day. Both the first round and the finals will take place at Savonlinna hall on Sunday 16 July.
