Savonlinna Opera Festival and Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences
to engage in media partnership

The Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences have entered into a three-year partnership the aim of which is to develop various media productions for the Opera Festival from a youthful, international perspective. The Festival is thus seeking a new approach in the field of new media applications and social media. Involved in the project each year will be over 40 media and IT students and teachers from Finland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium and Lithuania.

The theme for 2010 is the Savonlinna Opera Festival’s first International Singing Competition for young singers, designed to discover promising new opera singers. The Jury consists of Directors and Artistic Directors of some of the world’s leading opera houses. The students will work in partnership with experts from the Opera Festival, planning and building the competition website, creating and updating social media communities, interviewing competition singers and jury members, and day-to-day reporting for, among others, an Opera Channel. The biggest challenges will be the TV and multi-camera coverage of the preliminary rounds at the Savonlinna Hall on July 21 and 22 and the finals in Olavinlinna Castle on July 25. A programme about the finals will be shown at 6 pm on Tuesday July 27 on Finland’s MTV3 channel.

The joint project is part of the Erasmus intensive course programme and financed in Finland by CIMO, the Centre for International Mobility. Erasmus is Europe’s biggest student exchange programme.

Representatives of the media are invited to find out more about the project and the international students and teachers taking part at the Savonlinna Hall from 12 noon to 1 pm on Wednesday July 21, 2010, in connection with the preliminary rounds of the competition.

For interviews with contestants and members of the Jury call. +358 40 7454493 or email presso@operafestival.fi. There will be an opportunity to interview the contestants in Olavinlinna Castle after the finals on July 25.
