The Festival begins tomorrow!

The warmer summer days greet you as you arrive in Savonlinna. The excitement is already running high in the streets and squares. The premiere of The Merry Widow on July 3 marks the beginning of not only this year’s Savonlinna Opera Festival but also of a new era for Olavinlinna Castle. How will the Festival’s first ever operetta performance look on the Castle stage? We know it promises to be a fine visual spectacle in the true Viennese manner.

Opera Festival audiences will have a choice of three Verdi operas based on plays by William Shakespeare: Otello, Falstaff and Macbeth. Also on the programme will be Puccini’s La bohème and Bellini’s Norma. Complementing the collection of operas in Italian will be Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the last masterpiece by Leoš Janáček, From the House of the Dead.
