Finland’s Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow are negotiating a visit by the Opera Festival to Moscow in September 2018. The opera chosen for the visit is Verdi’s Otello.
“We are delighted that the Bolshoi has publicly confirmed the visit,” says the Opera Festival’s Artistic Director Jorma Silvasti. “It’s a great honour for us to be asked by the Bolshoi to demonstrate our Finnish operatic know-how. Our Otello is a powerful one, and excellently suited to the Bolshoi Theatre stage.”
“This is a fine sequel to our already close partnership”, adds General Director Jan Strandholm. The Bolshoi Theatre is right now visiting the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and performed last night in the presence of Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin during the latter’s working visit to Finland. The Bolshoi was the Festival’s guest in Olavinlinna Castle in 2007, and the Opera Festival visited Moscow in 2006.
Otello will be back in the repertoire for the summer 2018 season of the Savonlinna Opera Festival, in a co-production with France’s Chorégies d’Orange. The stage director is Nadine Duffaut and the performances in medieval Olavinlinna Castle in summer 2018 will be conducted by Finland’s Hannu Lintu.
Further details of the visit and artists will be confirmed later.
