When the Austrian Emperor, fired by the spirit of nationalism, wanted to offer his people art in their own language, Mozart upgraded the jolly Singspiel to the status of an opera. The nobles sing music to fit their grand emotions while the peculiar Oriental bass Osmin huffs and puffs and gets so drunk that he loses the tune. The mysterious Pasha Selim, the big boss at the seraglio, conceals his feelings and does not therefore sing a note.
“The part of Osmin is technically difficult and covers a wider vocal range than almost any other bass role. A nice challenge,” says Petri Lindroos, an old hand at Savonlinna. Once again there are two generations of Lindrooses at the 2019 Festival, for Petri’s son Kristian is to sing in Rigoletto.
