Still three months’ time to enter for Finland’s leading competition for young opera singers.

The aim of the Timo Mustakallio Competition arranged by the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Timo Mustakallio Foundation in collaboration with the Eero Rantala Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation is to help promising young Finnish singers develop their skills.

The one-day competition to be held in Savonlinna on July 16, 2017 (first round at 11.00 and finals at 19.00) is open to Finnish singers born in or after 1991. Candidates may have not more than two years’ professional experience and they can enter for the Timo Mustakallio Competition not more than twice. Members of the public are invited to attend the competition, in which men and women compete in one and the same category. In both rounds the contestants sing one Lied and one opera aria of their own choice with piano accompaniment, choosing different works for each round. The works will be sung in the original key and language, and the arias with recitatives. The deadline for applications is the end of March. Applications must be accompanied by a recording, to be used by the organisers for a pre-selection audition in May.

Sixteen singers were selected on the basis of their auditions in 2015, and eight of these – four women and four men – for the finals. The first prize is worth €15,000. A scholarship worth €10,000 will also be awarded from the Eero Rantala Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

A concert given by the winners of the 2017 competition will be held at the Savonlinna Hall during the 2018 Opera Festival season, when the 2017 finalists will also be invited to attend a free masterclass in Savonlinna.

The Jury will be chaired by Jorma Silvasti, Artistic Director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival, with opera singers Edith Mathis and Tommi Hakala, and conductor Hannu Lintu as the other members.
