There has been a change in the cast of the Savonlinna Opera Festival’s summer 2025 production of Macbeth. Baritone Ludovic Tézier has regrettably been forced to cancel his upcoming performances due to health reasons. Italian baritone Gabriele Viviani will now take on the role of Macbeth. Additionally, the role of Lady Macbeth’s attendant will be performed by Annika Leino instead of Cassandre Berthon.
“My appearance in Tosca at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2022 left a lasting impression on me. I fell in love with both the festival and the breathtaking nature of this unique location. However, on my doctor’s orders, I now have to prioritise my health. It has not been an easy decision, and I deeply regret having to cancel my performances this year due to health problems. Singing in Savonlinna has been a true joy, and I send my warmest regards to everyone involved.”, says Ludovic Tézier.
“We are saddened by Ludovic Tézier’s illness and wish him strength and a swift recovery. His performance at the 2022 Festival was an unforgettable tour de force, and we hope to welcome him back to Savonlinna in the future,” says the festival’s Artistic Director Ville Matvejeff.
“We are grateful that Gabriele Viviani, who gave a stellar performance in the title role of Nabucco in Savonlinna in 2024, will now step into the role of Macbeth. Viviani is one of the most exciting Italian baritones of our time, regularly engaged by top houses from London’s Covent Garden to the Vienna State Opera and Madrid’s Teatro Real,” Matvejeff continues.
Gabriele Viviani and Annika Leino will now appear in all performances of Macbeth. The summer 2025 performances will proceed as planned despite the cast changes. The legendary Macbeth production, originally directed in Savonlinna by Ralf Långbacka, will be revived next summer under the direction of Vilppu Kiljunen, with Lorenzo Passerini conducting. Other leading roles will be sung by Saioa Hernández, Goran Jurić, and Johan Krogius.
Macbeth at Olavinlinna Castle 4, 7, 9, 12, 15 July 2025.
