  • Good to know
When La Traviata premiered in 1853, an Italian newspaper wrote that contemporary settings of an opera guaranteed that it would be "a failure as a work of art," and said that modern clothing onstage "lacked beauty and harmony of form." Verdi was in turn forced by the censors to set La Traviata in the 1700s, even though he wanted it to be contemporary.

When Courtesan Violetta and nobleman Alfredo meet, it does not take them long to give in to love. Their whirlwind romance takes them from the bustling social salons of Paris into the quiet French countryside. She leaves a life of luster and riches behind. He angers his father by living in sin with an impure woman. After a visit by Alfredos father, Violetta realizes, that them being together is destroying Alfredo’s life and his family’s reputation. She returns to her former life and is confronted by an angry Alfredo, who thinks she has used him. Some time passes by, and Violetta is on her deathbed. Tuberculosis has struck her down. Poor and alone, she awaits death. When Alfredo learns the reason why Violetta left him and that she is dying, he comes to her. They plan to leave Paris, but there is no time left.

After Alexandre Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias Verdi composed an opera full of undying melodies, beginning with the famous drinking song “Libiamo ne ‘liete calici” via Violettas heart-wrenching aria “Estrano…Af fors’e lui” to Violetta and Alfredo’s hopeful, yet sad Duetto “Parigi, o cara”. It is no wonder, that La Traviata is one of the most played operas.

This new production of La Traviata is a guest performance by The Göteborg Opera.

Synopsis

Courtisan Violetta and nobleman Alfredo fall in love – against all odds and conventional norms. Together they leave their swirling social lives in Paris behind and settle in the countryside. Money is tight, so Alfredo leaves to Paris. This is when Alfredo’s father Germont arrives and asks Violetta to break up with Alfredo. Their union can never work and will lead to a lot of social reprecussions for Alfredo. Violetta is broken, but understands. She leaves Alfredo and returns to her glittery Paris life. Under her shiny facade Violetta is slowly dying of Tubercolosis, a fact, that not even Alfredo knows of. Alfredo finds her and lets her feel his rage, because he feels betrayed. A few months go by and Violetta is alone in her apartment. She’s poor and will die soon. Alfredo comes to see her one last time, having learnt from his father, why Violetta left. She dies in his arms, dreaming of their life in the country.
