King Roger
Karol Szymanowski
The coronavirus pandemic is affecting our plans for the summer 2021 Savonlinna Opera Festival. All three performances of King Roger have been cancelled.
If you have bought or reserved a ticket to King Roger, don’t worry. We will reach out to every one of you. See our instructions for ticket holders.
”It’s the splendour of sound, created by more than 200 performers on the stage and in the orchestra pit, that makes King Roger so magnificent. For King Roger, reducing the number of performers would be too great an artistic compromise.”
Artistic Director Ville Matvejeff
The festival must be safe for the performers and the rest of our staff. For all our other productions, we can ensure safe distancing on the stage and in the orchestra pit by reducing the size of the orchestra and choir, but for King Roger, that would have been too heavy an artistic compromise.
Putting together such a large-scale premiere is also financially impossible, as the safe distancing in the audience means almost 2 million euro in lost ticket revenue to us.
”I feel bad for the audience, the artists, and the entire international opera scene. King Roger deserved to have its Finnish premiere,” Artistic Director Ville Matvejeff says.
”We want to ensure the best possible circumstances for the premiere, and we are now looking into staging it in the future. Thankfully, we can offer alternatives to ticket holders, such as Werther, Julius Caesar and La traviata.”
