The 34th Timo Mustakallio Singing Competition highlights talents of the future. The winner is not necessarily the most highly developed participant, but rather a singer with exceptional vocal talent and special interpretative skills.
Founded in 1974, the competition has served as a springboard to international careers for many renowned Finnish singers. Among its winners are Walton Grönroos, Raimo Sirkiä, Jorma Silvasti, Kirsi Tiihonen, Johanna Rusanen, Helena Juntunen, Marjukka Tepponen and Tuuli Takala.
Successful participants have frequently been invited to perform at the Savonlinna Opera Festival without delay. Recent winners Elsa Angervo (2025), Iris Candelaria (2019), and Sonja Herranen (winner of the 2019 Eero Rantala Prize) and Martin Iivarinen (winner of the 2025 Eero Rantala Prize) were featured in the 2026 production of The Marriage of Figaro. Iirisilona Segerstam (winner 2023) sang in Nabucco.
The competition, which bears his name, was founded by opera singer Timo Mustakallio (1929–1984), who later became Director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
Attending the competition is easy to combine with a visit to the Opera Festival, as all the excitement takes place over a single day. Both the preliminary and final rounds will be held at Savonlinna Hall on Sunday, 18 July 2027.
The programme consists of art songs and opera arias chosen by the competitors.
