In the summer of 2027, Olavinlinna Castle will fill with the sounds of a jubilee year as Savonlinna Opera Festival celebrates its 115th anniversary. Aino Ackté’s vision from 1912 has withstood wars and quiet decades, and it still lives on: in love, passion and memories that do not fade.
The anniversary programme brings both new and familiar works to Olavinlinna, grand emotions and the lightness of a summer evening. Umberto Giordano’s rare gem Andrea Chénier will be heard in the castle for the first time. Based on real events, the work takes us to the darkest moments of the French Revolution: spies, denunciations, political intrigue and love in the shadow of the guillotine. A work that is rarely seen in Finland.
The irresistibly charming The Barber of Seville returns by popular demand. The Magic Flute will once again carry children and adults alike into the fairy-tale world it has conjured for decades. The Estonian National Opera joins the celebrations with Bizet’s Carmen. There is cause for celebration, as the Estonian National Opera was the first international opera guest at Olavinlinna exactly 40 years ago. In addition, the Timo Mustakallio Singing Competition will introduce the voices of the future.
