3. The choir of choirs
Our magnificent chorus is always a reason to visit the Savonlinna Opera Festival, but in Nabucco it deserves special mention. Nabucco is what one can truly call a chorus opera. It also contains the chorus that almost everyone can hum along to, “Va, pensiero”, the famous chorus of the Hebrew slaves. This piece of music became a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento and stands for Verdi like almost no other work. It is no coincidence that it was this piece that the 200,000 people present at Verdi’s funeral began to sing.
